While reading through chapter 13 I learned an enormous amount behind the importance of outlines. Not only have I learned a lot from this chapter, but I also learned a lot from just the two we have done in this class. They are the base line for putting together and delivering a successful speech. This chapter starting off by introducing the “two outlines” idea, and this truly opened my eyes to so much. The differences between the working outline and the speaking outline are slim, but overall, having two can be very beneficial. In my eyes, an outline is more like notes. Something to help you study or quickly go over a lot of information in a short amount of time. Using key words or short sentences is very helpful in both of these outlines. It goes on about how outlines can allow you to look at less of your paper and more of your audience and I honestly couldn’t agree more. It allows you to see key or meaningful points and bring your mind back to that specific part of your essay so you can further elaborate on that point. Keeping your outline font big and using delivery cues can also be very beneficial when delivering a speech. Overall, and outline can only allow you to look up more and connect with your audience to better engage with them and allow them to connect to you and the message you’re trying to get across. Making sure they are organized, and short but to the point is very important and that was a big takeaway I had after reading this chapter. I cannot wait to see how I can apply these concepts to my speeches, and watch my overall speech evolve.
